Jessie James Chapman born on February 12, 1949, to Martha and Isaac Chapman, passed away on February 21, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and devotion. He was a beloved father, brother, grandfather, and friend.
Jessie grew up surrounded by love and the close-knit bond of family. He was one of eight siblings, including his brother Eddie Alma Chapman, and his sisters Gladys Coats (Grove Hill, Alabama), Claudia Washington (Detroit, Michigan), Loretta Curtis Fenton (Norwood, Georgia), Mary Chapman (Grove Hill, Alabama), Betty Dickerson (Sacramento, California), Verta Brown (Tuscaloosa, Alabama), and Bonnie Williams (Deceased). His parents, Martha and Isaac Chapman, preceded him in death.
While attending Wilson Hall High School, Jessie embarked on a distinguished career, first serving his country with honor and valor. Drafted into the military on July 9, 1968, he bravely served a tour in Vietnam from December 4, 1968, through December 3, 1969. His exemplary service earned him several accolades, including the Army Accommodation Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. Jessie retired from the United States Army Reserve on October 20, 1994, having served his country faithfully for over 20 years.
In addition to his military service, Jessie worked diligently at Church Pews, Inc for 28 years before retiring. He was known for his strong work ethic, dedication, and integrity, leaving a lasting impression on all those he encountered.
He was a loving father to his children and family was at the center of Jessie's life. He was married to Etta Chapman to this union was born four children, Decarlos Michelle Chapman (San Antonio, TX), Cedric Liz Chapman (Fulton, AL), Kendra Waters (Grove Hill, AL), and Britt Reneisha Chapman (Montgomery, AL), and a cherished grandfather to his seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Two special relatives Anthony Love(nephew) and Enos Martin (Cousin). His love and guidance will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Jessie will be remembered for his kind heart, unwavering strength, and selfless devotion to his family and country. Though he may be gone, his memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Jessie James Chapman will be held at St Luke Baptist Church, 416 St. Luke Road, Grove Hill, AL 36451 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Jackson Memorial Funeral Home, 203 E. Ross Street, Jackson, AL 36545.
