Clara Callier Obituary

Clara Mae Daffin Callier, affectionately called “Babysister” by all who knew and loved her, was born
on June 14, 1926 to loving parents, Johnson Louis Daffin, Sr. and Mamie Pogue Daffin in Grove Hill,
AL.

Clara grew up in the Orange Hill Community where her home life was filled with an abundance of love
from relatives, brothers, sisters and cousins. Her parents took in and nurtured so many cousins that you
could not distinguish cousins from brothers and sisters. Hers was a happy life filled with joy and pranks
with cousins, brothers and sisters.

Clara was an amazing person who was smart and caring. Her parents were passionate about their
children receiving an education. Although there was no high school for her to attend in her
community, her parents sent her to a boarding school in Thomasville, AL where she graduated with her
high school diploma.

Back home she fell in love with Washington Chester (W.C.) Callier. They married and shared a
wonderful life living in Alabama. W.C. was drafted to serve our country in the United States Army and
during his years of military service, they lived in New Mexico. Upon moving back to Alabama, both
Clara and W.C. continued their education with W.C. receiving a degree in education and Clara receiving
the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Alabama State University in
Montgomery, AL. Clara and W.C. moved to Mobile, AL and they made a happy home there together until
W.C.’s death in 2011. For many years Clara taught school in the Mobile County Public School System.
She loved her students and felt it to be her calling to help young people become the best in all their
endeavors.

Clara grew up in the love of Christ. She was baptized in the Orange Hill Missionary Baptist Church.
Among other church activities and responsibilities, she sang in the choir, was an active Sunday School
member, and served in the Church kitchen. She was also Worthy Matron of the Winbush Success
Chapter No. 749 Order of the Eastern Star in Grove Hill. After moving to Mobile, Alabama, she
remained a faithful member at Orange Hill Baptist Church.
