Annie Chapman Obituary

Annie Laura Coates Chapman, age 90, of Grove Hill, Alabama, peacefully entered eternal rest on February 16, 2026, in her beloved hometown of Grove Hill, Alabama.

She was born on July 5, 1935, in Grove Hill, Alabama, to the late Laura and Lincoln Coates, where she lived a life rooted in faith, family, and service to her community.

Annie was preceded in life by many loved ones and leaves behind a legacy carried on by her devoted family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Laura and Lincoln Coates; her husband, Walter Chapman; and her brother, Robert Coates. She is survived by her sister, Arlean (John) Patterson of Silverhill, AL. She was a loving and dedicated mother to Alfred Chapman of Grove Hill, AL; Darryl (Barbara) Chapman of Clarksville, TN; Nelwyn Smith of Grove Hill, AL; and Jeffrey (Juanita) Chapman of Grove Hill, AL.

Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren: Marella Ezell of Jackson, AL; Ashley Bynes of Atlanta, GA; Shauna Chapman of Nashville, TN; Tommie (Jamesia) Armistead of Northport, AL; Gerald (Andrea) Chapman of Nashville, TN; and Nicholas (Michelle) Armistead of Opelika, AL: along with a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who brought her immense pride and joy.

Annie worked as an insurance agent.  She also dedicated 30 years of service as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Grove Hill Hospital, where she compassionately cared for countless patients as her commitment to serving others.

A faithful and active member of Mt. Zion #2 Baptist Church, Annie served as church clerk and remained devoted to her church family throughout her life. She was also a proud member of the Order of the Eastern Star (Bertha Mae Chapter) for 60 years, a poll worker in her community, and an active member of the NAACP.

She enjoyed fishing, community involvement, and spending time with her family. Known for her kind heart, strong spirit, loving nature, and generous ways, Annie touched the lives of everyone she encountered. She was known for her favorite saying:
“I’m fine as wine in the summertime, even though I don’t drink it.”

Her life was a testament to faith, service, resilience, and unconditional love. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
