Dewey Johnson, affectionately known as “Granddaddy” to many, was born June 21, 1930 to the late Charlie Johnson and Viola Johnson in Buena Vista, Alabama. He worked many years for Brown & Root and Parham & Parham before becoming a self-employed electrician until his retirement in 2016. Mr. Dewey enjoyed spending time with family and friends, watching wrestling, helping people in the community and taking road trips with his grandkids.
Mr. Dewey traded his time for eternity on Sunday, February 11, 2024 surrounded by family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sallie Bell Johnson; children, Comma C. Marsh, Margaret Trent and Michael Dewey Johnson; grandchild, Joe Johnson Jr.; sisters, Ollie Mae Abram, Minnie Jones, Lucille Barnes, Helen Brown and Mary Johnson Reynolds; brothers, Willie Clyde Johnson, Robert Lee Johnson, Peter Johnson, Deloyd Johnson, Woodrow Johnson and O’Neal Johnson.
He leaves to cherish his legacy, children, Robert (Aslean) Johnson of Mt. Vernon, Joe (Doris) Johnson of Calvert, Roosevelt Johnson, Stanley Johnson, Chinnisha Chapman and Stella Johnson, all of Jackson; brother, Jesse (Sandra) Johnson of Los Angeles, California; sister-in-law, Viola Johnson of Atmore; children he raised, Anthony (Mable) Bettis and Linda (Terry) Adams, both of Jackson, and LaTosha (Kenneth) Daniels of Montgomery; 22 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren; devoted caregiver, Ramona Bryant; with a host of other relatives and friends.
Service will be held on Sunday, February 18, 2 p.m., at Mt. Olive No. 2 Baptist Church, 105 Griffin St., Jackson, AL. Interment will follow in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Jackson.
Final life celebration has been entrusted to Jackson Memorial Funeral Home.
